Cynics Anonymous

I go to as many gigs as is financially possible and thought it would be sensible to keep a journal of gigs I go to, cds I buy, new and old bands I come across and anything else I fancy going on about.

13 Dec - Morrissey @ SECC Glasgow

Yes, I do realise that this is getting mildly ridiculous, as the SECC gig was my 5th Morrissey gig this year (see previos Manchester, Perth, Paisley and the Leeds festival) but you know what, although I am begining to feel like a bit of a stalker, I'll be at the next one. Morrissey concerts used to be years apart and while Mozza is on fire I'm going to take advantage of seeing every possible gig that is nearby.

The bonus with this was a support slot by PJ Harvey and what a support slot it was. I arrived just as she came onstage and I will definately try and see her again in her own right, as this was possibly the best support performance I have ever seen.

There isn't much I can add about the main act as it would read like hero worship, all I will say that Morrissey is a superb showman and can still spring the odd surprise or two!

Roll on 2005 and hopefully some more Mozza gigs!

There is a light that never goes out...

30 Nov - Sluts Of Trust @ The Glasgow Barfly

Rumors hightened the need to attend this gig and as such a babysitter was employed at the last minute. A wee bird had told me that this would be the last gig of the Sluts of Trust current line up and that changes were on the horizon so it would be special.

The rumours were confirmed when Anthony advised me before the gig that he had quit the band and the 2 piece would be cut in half! But rather than the story ending there, a bass player and new drummer have already been taken on and a host of new songs and a new sound should appear in the new year. Its a shame really as I love the band and have followed them for the last 18 months since signing to Chemical, although in hindsight I'm not sure how Chemical thought they would grow with little or no money invested in their publicity and promotion. I feel they were not properly looked after by Chemical and it comes aas no surpirse that they have parted company. Chemical Underground will be a lesser place without the sluts but hopefully someone will sign them and allow them to flurish.

Anyway, back to the gig. It was the wosrt I have seen them play and it took them a while to get into the swing of things, probably due to their previous period of inaction but by the end the old magic had returned but from where I was standing it was clear that Anthony had had enough and was emotionally drained by the end. But I'm sure he'll come back withsomeone else as he is a very talented drummer and shocking ly nice guy.

The gig was an Xfm showcase and 2 of thye other bands were superb The Multiplies and Jawbone but the third (whose name eludes me right now) were horrific and wuite frankly embarasing. when I remember their name I will amend this to save you from a watching one of their shocking sets.

All in all a good night but a strange one as it felt like the end of an era but hopefully a new dawn for the Sluts and I'm sure John will come back bigger and stronger and will have the sucess that a talent like his deserves.

Peace

12 Nov - SmytherJones @ 13th Note Cafe

Great gig tonight, we were first on and opened with a new song (currently untitled), which I was concerned about but it was quite superb and will hopefully be recorded in the New Year. The 35 minutes flew in for me and afterwards we drank and were merry after a great show.

More of the same in 2005 please!
